The
city is situated in the protected landscape area Štiavnické vrchy on the
southern slopes of the main ridge. Banská Štiavnica belongs to the most
beautiful and historically most interesting cities in Slovakia. In 1993 it
attained the highest international recognition when its historical center and
the technical sights in the vicinity were registered in the List of the World
Cultural and Natural Heritage of the UNESCO. In the historical center you can
find a lot of artistic and historical sights. The history of the city is closely
connected with mining industry. The halcyon days of Banská Štiavnica were in the
18th century when output of the gold and silver was at its highest. In this
period the city also met with the cultural and construction boom. A considerable
number of artificially created lakes – tajchy (Počúvadlo, Rychňava, Hodrušské
jazero and many others) – provide the tourists with ideal conditions for rest
and leisure.
